How to Automatically Clean Up Installers on Windows 11

Here is a quick experiment: open your Downloads folder, click the Search bar, and type *.exe.

How many setup files did you find? If your PC is more than a few months old, you probably have dozens of gigabytes wasted on:

  • One-time app installers: DiscordSetup.exe, ChromeSetup.exe, SteamSetup.exe.
  • Duplicate updates: installer(1).msi and installer(2).msi sitting side-by-side.
  • Massive GPU and hardware drivers: 700 MB graphics packages you installed once and will never click again.
The Problem

Setup installers are useless after installation. Once the program is installed on your hard drive, the original .exe file just sits in your Downloads folder forever, acting as dead weight that clutters your computer.

Why Windows 11 Tools Fail to Fix This

Windows 11 comes with Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense. While they sound useful, they don't solve the installer problem:

1. Windows Disk Cleanup Ignores Your Downloads:

Disk Cleanup only cleans system temp caches and Windows update logs. It leaves your downloaded setup files untouched.

2. Storage Sense Is Too Aggressive:

If you tell Storage Sense to clean Downloads, it permanently deletes everything—including your family photos, receipts, and important spreadsheets—without sorting by file type.

The Solution: An Automated "Installer Janitor" Rule

What you actually want is a smart background assistant that does one specific job:

"If a file in Downloads is an .exe, .msi, or .iso, and it is older than 3 days → safely move it to the Windows Recycle Bin."

Three days is the sweet spot: it gives you plenty of time to run the installer, restart your PC, and confirm the software works. Once three days pass, the heavy installer cleans itself up automatically.

How to Set It Up in 30 Seconds with FolderTamer

You don't need to write complex PowerShell scripts. You can activate this in two clicks using FolderTamer (available free on the Microsoft Store):

  1. Open FolderTamer on your Windows 10 or 11 PC.
  2. Click the 1-Click Recipes tab.
  3. Toggle ON the "Installer Janitor" recipe.
The rule immediately runs: file.extension in [".exe", ".msi", ".iso"] and file.age > 3d → Recycle Bin.
Why This is 100% Safe

FolderTamer never hard-deletes files. All swept installers route directly into your native Windows Recycle Bin with full undo support. If you ever realize you need a specific installer back, you can restore it with a single click, or use FolderTamer's built-in 1-Click Rollback button.

Never Think About Storage Clutter Again

By offloading installer cleanup to a silent background agent, your Downloads folder stays permanently light and fast. No more scrolling through dozens of identical setup icons to find the PDF you just downloaded.
